German municipal utilities Emergy, Gelsenwasser, Stadtwerke Muenster and Trianel have signed a memorandum of understanding to develop an electrolyser with a capacity of 50 MW in the Coesfeld area in western Germany, aiming to advance the hydrogen ramp-up.

The partners will assess the feasibility of the project called GreenLink Muensterland, Stadtwerke Muenster said on Wednesday. The planned electrolyser will produce hydrogen mainly from regionally generated renewable electricity. The green hydrogen will be then fed into the hydrogen core network. The project is expected to be completed by 2028.

The feasibility study will be pushed forward in the coming months. The focus will be on identifying suitable locations and evaluating potential funding options.

GreenLink Muensterland marks the second hydrogen project for Trianel which in 2021 agreed to build a green hydrogen plant in collaboration with municipal utility Stadtwerke Hamm in the German city of Hamm.
