Angola unveils to SADC delegates in Biópio world's largest 188.8 MW solar power plant

In a significant display of its renewable energy capabilities, Angola welcomed delegates from several Southern African Development Community (SADC) nations to visit its largest Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Plant located in Biópio, Catumbela municipality. The visit was part of the 42nd Joint Meeting of the Committee of Ministers Responsible for the SADC Energy and Water Sector, held to foster regional cooperation and showcase Angola’s strides in sustainable energy development.

The Solar PV Plant, inaugurated on July 20, 2022, by President João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço, boasts an impressive capacity of 188.8 Megawatts (MW) and is equipped with 500 thousand solar panels. It stands as a testament to Angola’s commitment to enhancing its energy infrastructure and reducing reliance on conventional energy sources.

The Angolan delegation leading the tour included prominent figures such as Kiala Pierre, Director of the International Exchange Office; Carolino Mendes, Director of the Office for Administration of the Cunene, Cubango, and Cuvelai River Basins; and Diógenes Diogo, Director of the National Electric Energy Directorate. Their presence underscored Angola’s dedication to showcasing its achievements in the renewable energy sector to its regional counterparts.

The visiting delegations from Namibia, Eswatini, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Malawi, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, along with the SADC Administrative Director, expressed satisfaction with the PV plant’s infrastructure and operational efficiency. The exchange of insights and experiences during the visit furthered the collaborative efforts among SADC countries in advancing sustainable energy solutions and addressing regional energy challenges.

Angola’s initiative to host such visits not only promotes regional cooperation but also strengthens its position as a leader in renewable energy within the SADC region. The Solar PV Plant in Biópio represents a significant step towards achieving Angola’s energy goals and supporting the broader objectives of the SADC Energy and Water Sector.

As the region continues to prioritize sustainable development and energy security, Angola’s Solar PV Plant stands as a beacon of progress and innovation, demonstrating the transformative impact of renewable energy investments in powering a sustainable future for all.
