Atlas Renewable Energy and ColbĂșn Sign Agreement for Pioneering Battery Storage Project

Atlas Renewable Energy and ColbĂșn S.A. have signed a 15-year energy purchase agreement for a pioneering battery energy storage system (BESS) project. Atlas will build the BESS system, while ColbĂșn will purchase the energy generated, estimated at up to 335 GWh annuallyâenough to power around 140,000 homes. This energy will help ColbĂșn maintain a steady supply of renewable power for its customers.
Located in MarĂa Elena, Antofagasta Region, the Stand-Alone BESS project will feature 230 MW of installed capacity and 920 MWh of daily storage (four hours). The energy will be injected into the Crucero 220 kV Substation, with commercial operations expected to begin in 2027.
This agreement marks a major step in integrating storage solutions into Chileâs energy matrix, enabling efficient use of renewable energy during periods of high demand. It optimizes the use of excess energy produced during the day, enhancing system efficiency.

ColbĂșnâs CEO, JosĂ© Ignacio Escobar, added, âTo ensure a responsible energy transition, we need storage systems to address renewable energy intermittency. This agreement is an important step forward and complements ColbĂșnâs other battery and hydroelectric projects, which have historically played a crucial role in energy storage.â
The collaboration between Atlas and ColbĂșn will significantly boost the efficiency of the National Electric System (SEN) and help optimize Chileâs energy transition through the development of advanced storage solutions.
