In December 2023, the average solar radiation in Germany reached a value of 16 kilowatt hours per square meter. This emerges from measurements by the German Weather Service (DWD). This roughly corresponds to the average for the period from 1981 to 2010, which the DWD puts at 17 kilowatt hours per square meter for the month of December. This solar radiation was measured even though the average amount of rain in Germany in December 2023 was 114 liters per square meter, according to statista.com, which was significantly higher than the average of the international climatological reference period set by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), which covers the years 1961 to 1990 . During this period, an average of 70 liters per square meter of rain fell in Germany in December.
The regional distribution of solar radiation last December was also exactly the same as the average of previous years. Solar radiation decreases continuously from north to south. Only some areas in northern North Rhine-Westphalia, eastern Saxony and northern Hesse received slightly less sun than the average for the period from 1981 to 2010. Parts of Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, however, saw a little more sun. Otherwise, everything nationwide last December was in line with the long-term data collected by the German Weather Service.
