BayWa inks VPPA to supply solar power to healthcare company in Europe

BayWa has inked a virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA) to supply solar power to a healthcare company in Europe.
The company will provide solar power to global medical technology leader Boston Scientific for 10 years.
As per the companies, BayWa r.e. will deliver additional electricity to the power grid from the newly constructed 15.1MW Alcalá solar farm in Spain. In return, Boston Scientific can secure renewable energy to address 80% of the company’s electricity needs in Europe.
“Our focus on improving patient health is inextricably linked with the health of the planet, and we have a responsibility to protect the world we all share,” Paudie O’Connor, senior vice president, Global Supply Chain, Boston Scientific, was quoted in a statement.
He added: “This power purchase agreement underlines our commitment to sourcing renewable energy in one of the many growing regions for our company where environmental sustainability is increasingly paramount for our customers.”
Boston Scientific said that it is their first VPPA contracted in Europe.
Meanwhile, Daniel Parsons, Head of PPA at BayWa r.e.,was quoted, “We’ve been active in the renewables PPA market since its beginning and we are very happy to see this type of green energy solution becoming more and more established across Europe.”
According to BayWa r.e., it has signed 77 PPAs so far with a volume of almost 2GW for ground-mounted solar, floating solar and onshore wind projects in Europe. Out of this, around 40% belongs to the Spanish market.
