The Brazilian Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) announced this week that 7.6 GW of new wind and solar power were added to the national grid this year. The country deployed 8.4 GW of new capacity in 2023, enough to meet the demand of more than 4 million local homes.
The expansion of electricity generation exceeded the target of the Growth Acceleration Program - New PAC for the year 2023 by 24.6%. The energy generation portfolio predicted an expansion of 951.5 megawatts (MW), but they were 1,186 MW of power were added to the National Interconnected System (SIN). The data was recorded until December 4th.
The growth was 100% due to renewable sources, with 630 MW from wind plants (53%) and 556 MW from photovoltaic sources (47%). The Northeast region recorded the largest expansion, representing 70% of total growth in 2023.
Among the states, the highlights are Minas Gerais, which contributed 360 MW of photovoltaic expansion, and Rio Grande do Norte, which contributed 214 MW of wind expansion and 96 MW of photovoltaic expansion, totaling 310 MW.
Also considering projects outside the New PAC, the expansion of energy generation reached 10,226 MW in 2023. Wind and solar energy represented 86.6% of this increase.
