Chilean utility Colbun has received environmental approval for its $450 million Celda Solar solar-plus-storage project in northern Chile. The project will have 421.9 MW of solar capacity and a battery energy storage system (BESS) of 240 MW/1,200 MWh. Once completed, it will be the largest solar investment in the Arica y Parinacota region and one of the largest storage projects in the country. The project will be located on public land covering approximately 960 hectares and will be covered with over 703,700 bifacial panels. Colbun expects the facility to generate around 1,100 GWh per year.
The Arica y Parinacota region has favorable conditions for solar energy, with a potential solar installation capacity of up to 43,000 MW. The region benefits from high levels of radiation, clear skies for most of the year, and ample land for solar power projects. Colbun's Celda Solar project will contribute to the region's renewable energy goals and help meet the growing demand for electricity in Chile.
