Colombia's Monomeros to use offshore wind for green ammonia plant

May 3 - Colombian fertiliser producer Monomeros SA has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Barranquilla city public lighting company Baranquilla APBAQ to work on an offshore wind powered green ammonia plant project.

Barranquilla, which lies close to the Caribbean Sea, is set to welcome Colombia’s and Latin America’s first offshore wind farm off its coast thanks to a separate MoU that the city signed in March with Danish investor Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP).

Monomeros has now committed to use the offshore wind energy to fuel its new USD-300-million (EUR 284.3m) green ammonia plant it will build in Barranquilla to displace imported grey ammonia, the company said in its joint statement with city-owned APBAQ.

According to the statement, the wind farm will come into operation in 2026.

The Colombian government unveiled the draft national offshore wind road map in February this year, detailing the country’s potential to introduce a new renewable energy technology off its coasts. The Barranquilla city council said on Tuesday that Colombian president Ivan Duque is due to present the definitive version of the road map today in Barranquilla.

The first project with CIP would bring some 350 MW of offshore wind capacity in an initial phase, but could reach up to 500 MW, the city said. The city and APBAQ were among entities that provided technical cooperation for the wind project.
