DEWA invests $250 million in Dubai's water security and solar-powered sustainability

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) is at the forefront of ensuring water security and sustainability in Dubai, aligning with its commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goal of ensuring the availability and sustainable management of water. The $250 million projects include the construction of water production plants utilizing Sea Water Reverse Osmosis (SWRO) technology, a solar energy project, and the allocation of industrial land to support operations.

DEWA’s vision involves producing 100% desalinated water using clean energy and waste heat by 2030. With a current desalinated water production capacity of 490 Million Imperial Gallons per Day (MIGD), including 63 MIGD using Reverse Osmosis, DEWA is dedicated to enhancing water resources through innovative technologies.

HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA, highlighted the three pillars for sustainable water production, emphasizing the use of clean solar power for desalination. DEWA’s Hassyan desalination project, the world’s largest solar-powered desalination plant based on the Independent Water Producer model, is a testament to this commitment. With a capacity of 180 MIGD, the project has an investment of AED 3.357 billion and will increase to 670 MIGD by 2027.

DEWA’s digital transformation includes the third phase of the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) Centre, contributing to real-time monitoring of Dubai’s water network. The Smart Grid Strategy, a key component of DEWA’s infrastructure development, integrates disruptive technologies like AI, drones, blockchain, and IoT for a seamless and connected service experience.

The Smart Grid also encompasses initiatives such as the Automatic Smart Grid Restoration System (ASGR) and the Big Data and Analytics platform. The ‘High-Water Usage Alert’ service, supported by the smart grid, detects leaks and notifies customers, contributing to efficient water usage.
