Portuguese renewables company EDP Renovaveis SA has struck a 15-year energy storage service agreement (ESSA) in the US state of California to commercialise a 92-MWac/386 MWh battery energy project it has set there.
Under the agreement, community choice aggregator Redwood Coast Energy Authority (RCEA), which serves California’s Humboldt County, will off-take the electricity stored in the Sandrini battery energy storage system (BESS) in the state, EDPR said on Tuesday.
The lithium-ion BESS is expected to go online in 2025. It will be co-located with the 100-MW Sandrini solar farm, which is due to start operations during 2024 with RCEA as the contracting party.
Once online, the Sandrini BESS will be charged either by the namesake solar farm or by power from the grid, according to EDPR.
So far, the Portuguese renewables pure-player has placed under contracts 58% of 17 GW of capacity it aims to install during the 2023-2026 period, the company added.
