The Almería de García-Carrión plant, where juices, gazpachos, creams and broths are made under the Don Simón and La Huerta Don Simón brands, already has its solar plant underway by Endesa X, the energy services subsidiary of Endesa. The alliance between the two companies, which includes the construction of nine photovoltaic solar installations for use in production centers throughout Spain, has become one of the largest business self-consumption projects carried out to date and a benchmark for the sector, as indicated by the electricity company, as shared by Europa Press.
Specifically, Endesa X has installed 2,640 photovoltaic modules that occupy an area of 5,600 square meters next to the plant where 100% natural products are made with a processing capacity of more than 120,000 tons of fruit and vegetables per year. Now, they can be produced in a more sustainable way thanks to solar panels, which have a power of 1.4 megawatts peak (MWp), which makes it possible to cover about 28% of the plant's energy needs and reduce the footprint of carbon dioxide up to 724 tons of CO2 each year.
In addition to the Don Simón facilities in Cítricos del Andarax, the other eight production centers of the García Carrión group, considered the leading winery in Europe and leader in the juice sector, already have their own photovoltaic solar installations in operation at the hands of Endesa X and all of them have a total power of 18.18 MWp. These are the Jaume Serra wineries, in Vilanova i la Geltrú, specialized in cavas and attached to the DO Cava, Catalunya and Penedès; Los Llanos, in the Valdepeñas DO, Marqués de Carrión, which produces and bottles wines in La Rioja, and Viña Arnáiz, in Haza, with a presence in the Ribera de Duero DO, as well as the Huelva, Daimiel, Jumilla and Segorbe plants .
To cover the rest of its energy needs, García Carrión also has a long-term energy supply contract, until 2032. Specifically, it is an energy purchase agreement known as PPA ('Power Purchase Agreement') and that has with guarantees of renewable origin. The commissioning of these solar installations, designed and built by Endesa X, is a commitment to sustainability and the reduction of the environmental impact in the production of García-Carrión wines and juices.
