Greece Lowers Target for 3rd Battery Storage Tender

Greece has trimmed the targeted capacity for its third tender round for battery energy storage systems (BESS) capacity to 200 MW from the initial 300 MW, Energypress reports.

The upcoming auction for standalone batteries will be held as part of the Balkan country’s ambitions to allocate 1 GW of BESS capacity through three tenders. After 411.8 MW of awarded projects in the maiden round and 299.8 MW in the second edition, the final one has been cut by 100 MW, sources in the know have said. Some of them have pointed out that funds to be saved with the capacity reduction will go for initiatives under Greece’s Recovery and Resilience Facility.

According to the insiders, details about the competition are due to be published in the government gazette within the next few days.

The third BESS tender will be open to proposals for standalone batteries with a four-hour duration in the regions of Western Macedonia, and Megalopoli in the Peloponnese. Winners will be able to receive subsidies of EUR 100,000 (USD 111,277) per MWh.
