Japan Tobacco Group (JT Group) has announced a commitment to accelerate efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions across its value chain.
The latest move comes as a part of its target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
Issuing a formal statement, the group informed that it has updated energy and emissions targets in its JT Group Environment Plan 2030 as it aims to be carbon neutral for its own operations by 2030.
JT Group said that it has already increased the proportion of renewable electricity it uses. It further mentioned that its revised targets for GHG emission reduction by 2030 are in line with science-based thinking.
JT Group President and Chief Executive Officer Masamichi Terabatake remarked, “As a leading global company, we believe that addressing global environmental concerns, especially those regarding climate change, forms the basis of our business management."
He further stated, "Today, we have set our new targets to achieve net-zero GHG emissions across our entire value chain by 2050. As an intermediate milestone, we aim to be carbon neutral in our operations by 2030," the statement reads.
According to the company, some of their initiatives include the use of renewable energy in factories around the world. It includes the installation of solar panels in the Batangas factory in the Philippines and the use of direct solar steam generation in its factory in Amman, Jordan.
Similarly, the other initiatives include the use of a biomass cogeneration system at a seasoning factory in Thailand and the installation of solar power generation panels at a factory in Japan.
