KenGen launches tender for 40MW floating solar project in Kenya

Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) is seeking consultants to assess the viability of a floating solar power plant with a potential capacity of around 40 MW.

The project, backed by the German Development Bank (KfW), aims to be situated on the Kamburu Hydropower Plant Reservoir in Kenya.

KenGen had previously conducted a pre-feasibility study in 2020, recommending a 40 MW floating PV project on the Kamburu dam due to factors such as minimal water level variation, simplified design, robust infrastructure, lower operating and maintenance costs, and reduced permitting costs as it would be owned by KenGen.

Additionally, KenGen is concurrently developing a 40 MW ground-mounted utility-scale solar PV pilot project in the Seven Forks Cascade near the Kamburu Hydropower Station.

All application documents for the tender must be electronically submitted through the exficon GmbH e-procurement platform by 15 December 2023, 15:00 hrs. Central European Time (CET).
