Philippines' energy regulator speeds up approvals for solar home systems ahead of El Niño storm

In anticipation of the upcoming El Niño and the approaching summer months, the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) has announced the streamlining of the permit process for solar home systems. ERC Chairperson Mona Dimalanta revealed that they have collaborated with local government units to establish a convenient one-stop shop for securing permits.

Dimalanta explained that the ERC’s initiative involves simplifying the permit process for installing solar home systems. Through partnerships with local governments, they have created one-stop shops, eliminating the need for individuals to visit ERC offices for permit processing.

The Department of Energy (DOE) and ERC are actively advocating for the use of solar home systems as an alternative solution to alleviate energy demand on the grid. To support this initiative, the ERC has teamed up with the Landbank of the Philippines (LBP) to provide financing assistance for those interested in installing solar home systems. Additionally, they are developing programs to aid cooperatives in addressing energy challenges that may arise during the dry season.

Dimalanta highlighted the Anti-Bill Shock Protection Program, implemented in collaboration with LandBank last year, which allows cooperatives to borrow from LandBank to offset electricity price increases. This ensures that consumers are not immediately burdened with the entire cost, and LandBank helps cover the shortfall until the cooperatives can pay the generating plants.

Looking ahead, the ERC is exploring a partnership with PAG-IBIG’s loan facility to encourage more households to adopt solar home systems, promoting sustainable and eco-friendly energy solutions.
