Philippines' SMC to bring online 690 MW of batteries in early 2022




Philippine conglomerate San Miguel Corp (PSE:SMC) confirmed that its power business is due to start the operation of an initial 690 MW of battery energy storage facilities in early 2022.


By the end of 2022, SMC Global Power Holdings Corp expects to complete 1 GW of battery storage capacity across 31 facilities.


SMC detailed the battery plans in a stock exchange statement, confirming an article in Business Mirror.


SMC Global Power has said it will invest up to USD 1 billion (EUR 887m) in battery storage projects.


In 2021, Fluence said it had commissioned the first batteries out of a 470-MW/470-MWh energy storage portfolio for SMC Global Power. Finnish technology group Wartsila Corp (HEL:WRT1V) also announced the commissioning of 60 MW of energy storage systems under contracts with SMC Global Power.


“The BESS facilities are intended to augment the renewable energy portfolio of SMC Global Power which includes the construction of solar, liquified natural gas and hydroelectric power plants to address the continuing need of the country for reliable and affordable power,” reads SMC’s statement on Wednesday.
