PLN joins forces with JERA to develop green power ecosystem in Indonesia


PT PLN (Persero) through its subsidiary, Subholding PLN Energi Primer Indonesia (PLN EPI), has signed a memorandum of understanding with Japan-based JERA Co. Inc. to explore strategic cooperation in supply, supply chain optimization, and LNG infrastructure for PLN Group while advancing the green energy ecosystem in Indonesia.


The collaboration, aiming to transform PLN EPI into a world-class primary energy company, focuses on various aspects, including procurement, supply optimization, midstream LNG development, and human resource development. It also includes exploring the potential of green or blue ammonia and green or blue hydrogen for projects replacing fossil fuels.


PLN President Director, Darmawan Prasodjo, highlighted the partnership’s significance in implementing primary energy management and transitioning towards green hydrogen as a future energy source.


Iwan Agung Firstantara, Main Director of PLN EPI, emphasized the role of gas, particularly LNG, as a short-to-medium-term substitute for fuel, diesel, and coal, supporting the energy transition alongside renewable energy development.


The collaboration aims to optimize the LNG supply chain, infrastructure, human resources, and technology for green energy utilization within the PLN Group. JERA’s commitment to supporting PLN EPI’s journey towards a reliable primary energy supply chain aligns with its shared vision and business models.


Shinsuke Nakayama, Executive Officer and Head of the Platform Business Group JERA sees the collaboration as part of decarbonization efforts in line with the energy transition, contributing to a brighter and greener future for Indonesia and PLN.


The collaboration reflects a strategic step towards sustainable energy practices, emphasizing LNG development and green energy initiatives in support of Indonesia’s energy transition.
