Portugal to open offshore wind energy auction from 6 to 8GW

Portugal is all set to open offshore wind energy auctions with a capacity minimum between 6 and 8GW.

According to Secretary of Energy João Galamba, the offshore auction will take place soon and will be larger than previous ones.

The local media reports stated that the auction will be "more complex than the others, which will not be launched in just three months, because it involves industrialization of ports."

The government is now trying to shift the focus to offshore wind energy to boost the energy transition.

"We are going to make this assessment and launch the offshore energy auction as soon as possible because, given the enormous electricity needs that we will have associated, we must also look to the sea. It is an alternative to accelerate, "Galamba was quoted in a report.

It has been reported that a pilot project will be launched in an industrial area called Sines.

The government is said to have discussed the prospects and other aspects with different companies like Iberdrola, Orsted and the EDP/Engie.
