Singapore receives bids for 1.2 gigawatts of lower-carbon electricity

Singapore has received 20 proposals in response to a tender seeking 1.2 gigawatts of lower-carbon electricity imports starting in 2027.

The country had opened the tender to supply it with low-carbon electricity from overseas.

As per the officials, the Energy Market Authority got bids from Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Laos. The tender called for supply of different sorts of power including solar, wind, geothermal and hydro.

The authority informed that the deadline for final submissions is in mid-June. The results will be out by the end of the year.

To be noted, Singapore is on the way to decarbonise its power mix as the country generates 95% of its electricity from natural gas. It has set a goal of bringing in around 30% of its electricity by 2035.

Importing of power comes at a time when Singapore is holding talks on bringing in power from different channels. It is reported that it is also building an undersea cable to bring in solar power from the north of Australia. Singapore is also considering nuclear energy.
