Solar thermal energy has generated 4,695 GWh in 2023, 13.9% more than the generation in 2022 and is 2.3% above the average of the last five years, according to the Spanish Association for the Promotion of the Industry Thermosolar (Protermosolar).
Solar thermal generation in Spain has demonstrated its reliability, achieving specific contributions close to 9% to the system and its global production represents 2% of the total electricity generation in Spain in 2023, which highlights its high strategic value in the current energy mix.
In addition, the solar thermal plant has made specific nighttime contributions of 3.5% and an average of up to 2% to the total nighttime generation in months such as April and July thanks to its storage, which allows it to generate energy during all hours of the day. constant and reliable manner.
Solar thermal technology plays an essential role in achieving decarbonization objectives as it is a manageable and renewable technology that provides firmness, flexibility and security to the electrical system, favoring the gradual elimination of fossil fuels and reducing Spain's energy dependence. from third countries.
Likewise, solar thermal technology also provides an important socioeconomic impact in those areas that have solar thermal projects. The currently existing plants are located in towns located in the so-called “Empty Spain”, being a source of economic wealth for these towns from the construction phase of the plants.
Óscar Balseiro, general secretary of Protermosolar, commented: “These data are very positive for the sector and highlight the strategic role of solar thermal, which is positioned as a determining technology in the decarbonization of the electricity sector, industry and key to the integration of other non-manageable renewables. Solar thermal is a technology of high strategic value due to its independence, its synchrony, its contribution of technological autonomy to Spain and its ability to displace fossil technologies during daytime and nighttime hours, being the only renewable production source that can decarbonize during all hours of the day.”
