Adani Group has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Bhutan’s state-owned Druk Green Power Corporation (DGPC) to jointly develop 5,000 megawatts (MW) of hydropower and pumped storage projects in Bhutan.
This agreement builds upon the ongoing partnership between the two companies for the 570/900 MW Wangchhu Hydropower Project, in which DGPC holds a 51% stake and Adani retains 49%. Under the new deal, additional hydropower and pumped storage projects will be identified, with detailed project reports to be prepared and phased implementations to follow.
As part of this collaboration, Adani will also play a key role in ensuring reliable power offtake and the integration of Bhutan’s hydropower into India’s commercial electricity markets. This is expected to further enhance Bhutan’s position as a clean energy supplier in the regional power trade.
The partnership has received support from both the Royal Government of Bhutan and the Government of India. It is closely aligned with Bhutan’s Renewable Energy Roadmap, which targets an additional 20,000 MW of generation capacity by 2040.
Hydropower remains a critical pillar in South Asia’s renewable energy landscape, offering grid stability and sustainable energy security, while supporting growing regional electricity demand.
