Amazon to use solar energy to power operations in Spain

Amazon is all set to use solar energy in Spain as part of its commitment to power operations with 100% renewable energy.

The solar energy will be supplied by Fotowatio Renewable Ventures (FRV), a subsidiary of Abdul Latif Jameel Energy.

It has been reported that the latest agreement is under an agreement, where Amazon Web Services is picked up by Abdul Latif Jameel as its preferred cloud provider.

According to Amazon, FRV will supply clean energy capacity to power Amazon’s operations from five solar plants in Spain. Out of these plants, one plant is already under operation, while the remaining four projects are due for completion next year, it informed.

These five solar farms are likely to generate more than 1.5 terawatt-hours (TWh) of clean energy annually.

Meanwhile, Abdul Latif Jameel is working towards “decarbonisation goals by migrating its on-premises information technology workloads to AWS, further reducing its carbon footprint,” a local report mentioned.

Managing director of FRV Iberia Fernando Salinas Loring was quoted in a statement, “FRV aims to drive innovation and develop solutions that can make renewable energy accessible to everyone. This strategic collaboration with Amazon will enable us to continue contributing to the decarbonization of the electricity sector and its independence from fossil fuels to drive economic, social, and environmental advancements for future generations.”
