AMEA Power, a leading renewable energy company, announced today the commencement of its 24 MWp Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Project in Uganda. The groundbreaking ceremony, held today, was graced by Hon. Dr. Ruth Nankabirwa Ssentamu, Uganda’s Minister of Energy and Mineral Development, who served as the Guest of Honour. Also present were Ms. Irene Bateebe, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development, and Mr. Aqueel Bohra, Chief Investment Officer of AMEA Power.
The event was attended by senior representatives from Uleppi Subcounty, Madi Okollo District, local Members of Parliament, the Ministry of Energy & Mineral Development, Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Limited (UETCL), the Electricity Regulatory Authority, the Ugandan Embassy to the United Arab Emirates, and various government and private energy sector agencies.
The 24 MWp Solar PV project will be executed by Ituka West Nile Uganda Limited, a fully AMEA Power-owned company registered in Uganda. Located on a 52-hectare site in Ombachi village, Uleppi Subcounty, Madi Okollo District, approximately 450 km from Kampala, the project features a 1X24 MVA 33/132 kV transformer substation/switchyard. Power will be transmitted via the new Lira-Gulu-Nebbi-Arua 132 kV line, managed by UETCL, the offtaker. Upon completion, this project will be the largest utility-scale grid-connected solar PV installation in the West Nile Region.
The project, with an investment of USD 19 million, secured financing at COP28 from Emerging Africa Infrastructure Fund (EAIF), while the African Trade and Investment Development Insurance (ATIDI) is providing support through its Regional Liquidity Support Facility (RLSF).
Hussain Al Nowais, Chairman of AMEA Power, commented, “We are thrilled to launch this landmark solar initiative in Uganda, marking a significant milestone in our expansion across East Africa. This project aligns with Uganda’s goals for a sustainable energy future and is expected to bring considerable economic and environmental benefits.”
The solar PV power plant is slated for commissioning in Q3 2025. Once operational, it will be AMEA Power’s first asset in Uganda, generating approximately 53,940 MWh of clean energy annually, powering over 192,640 households, and reducing carbon emissions by 26,600 tonnes each year.
The Power Purchase Agreement with Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Ltd. and the Implementation Agreement with the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development were signed in September 2023.
AMEA Power is committed to engaging with local communities through its ‘Community Investment and Development Programs’, focusing on gender equality, education, and training initiatives.
