Apple Accelerates Global Investments in Clean Energy and Water

Apple has today announced significant advancements in expanding global clean energy efforts and accelerating progress toward its ambitious Apple 2030 goal of achieving carbon neutrality across its entire value chain by the decade’s end. The company now powers its global operations with over 18 gigawatts of clean energy, a threefold increase since 2020. This progress includes new solar investments in the U.S. and Europe to address the energy used by customers to charge their devices.

Apple is also advancing its 2030 target to replenish 100% of the fresh water used in high-stress locations. New partnerships aim to deliver nearly 7 billion gallons of water benefits over the next 20 years. Since 2013, Apple’s Supplier Clean Water Program has saved 76 billion gallons of fresh water through its suppliers.

Electricity is a major component of Apple’s carbon footprint. Over 320 suppliers have transitioned to clean electricity, contributing 16.5 gigawatts of renewable energy to Apple’s supply chain. This has led to a reduction of over 18.5 million metric tons of carbon emissions. Apple is investing in solar projects in Michigan and Spain, and has partnered with CleanMax in India to add 14.4 megawatts of rooftop solar capacity.

In China, Apple’s China Clean Energy Fund has supported over 1 gigawatt of wind and solar projects across 14 provinces, generating more than 2,400 gigawatt-hours of renewable energy annually.

For water resilience, Apple is working on high-impact projects in Northern and Southern California, Arizona, and India, committing over $8 million since 2023 to replenish water sources. Projects include restoring flood plains and protecting forests to enhance watershed resilience.

Apple’s Green Bonds have supported these initiatives, with $3.4 billion allocated from a total of $4.7 billion issued since 2016. These investments are crucial in accelerating Apple’s progress toward a sustainable future.
