Atlantic Copper, part of US natural resources group Freeport-McMoRan Inc , has committed to procuring electricity from a proposed 41-MW solar farm to power its copper refinery in Huelva, southern Spain.
Spanish renewables company Capital Energy said on Friday it had signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) with Atlantic Copper to supply it with 43.8 GWh of electricity annually for an initial period of ten years. The power supply is due to commence in 2025.
The solar farm linked to the agreement will be located in the town of Teba in Malaga province. Capital Energy said it recently secured the environmental permit and consent for the project.
The PPA with Capital Energy will enable Atlantic Copper to raise the share of direct renewable energy purchases to 42% from today’s 30%, the copper producer said in a separate statement.
