French food retailer Carrefour has announced a commitment to procure renewable energy from a portfolio comprising 43.3 MW of wind and solar parks operated by German developer VSB Group in France. This initiative will be executed through five long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs) established with VSB France.
The energy supply will primarily come from the Eoliennes de Guehenno and Eoliennes de Fadoumal wind farms located in Brittany and Occitania. Additionally, solar energy will be sourced from three photovoltaic (PV) plants: Soleil de Gaujac, Soleil de Balsac, both in Occitania, and Soleil d'Izernore in the Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes region.
This arrangement is set to benefit 26 hypermarkets within Carrefour’s network across France, aligning with the retailer’s ambitious target to utilize 100% renewable electricity by 2030. Felix Grolman, CEO of VSB Group, emphasized that this partnership represents a significant advance in promoting renewable energy while generating economic value.
In a related move, Carrefour recently secured a deal to purchase electricity from a 52-MWp solar farm to be constructed by France-based Qair in Italy. This contract will provide approximately 75 GWh of renewable energy annually for Carrefour’s stores.
