South Africa’s state-owned utility Eskom has initiated a tender for the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) of a 72 MW solar PV project at the Komati Power Station in Mpumalanga province.
The project will be delivered under a three-year turnkey contract, backed by World Bank financing. It includes:
18 months for design, procurement, construction, testing, and commissioning
Followed by 18 months of operations and maintenance
Key dates:
Pre-application briefing (online): August 14
Deadline for expressions of interest (postal submission): September 30
Full RFP release expected in November
This new solar development comes on the heels of Eskom’s recent green hydrogen pilot project at its research facility in Johannesburg (May–June 2025).
South Africa continues to accelerate its energy transition. In July, the government approved six new solar projects totaling nearly 1.3 GW under Bid Window 7 of its national renewables procurement program. The country added 1.1 GW of solar capacity in 2024, following a record-breaking year in 2023.
🔋 Target: 3 GW of new renewables annually, ramping up to 5 GW/year by 2030.
