Danish renewables developer European Energy A/S said on Thursday it has initiated construction of a 36-MW solar park in Sweden, which is being added to an existing 48-MW wind farm in Skaramala in the municipality of Tingsryd.
According to the company, this will be Sweden’s first large-scale hybrid wind and solar farm. The co-location of wind and solar leads to more efficient use of land, shared grid connection and more balanced output, it highlighted.
The hybrid plant is being built in forest land with low natural values already utilised for wind power, said Peter Braun, country manager in Sweden at European Energy.
The facility is expected to produce 163 GWh of green electricity per year, of which 38 GWh solar power. The solar park is targetted to be completed this year, with the entire project feeding power into the grid by the end of 2024.
The solar system will be installed on an area of 49 hectares, where land preparations have been underway for several months. The forest, which “was ripe for felling,” has been taken down and rocks have been covered with a deeper layer of soil, the company explained.
European Energy also plans to implement measures to increase biodiversity.
