The Federal Network Agency has determined preliminary figures for the expansion of renewable energies in 2023. The installed capacity of renewable energy systems increased by 17 GW to a total capacity of almost 170 GW. Compared to the previous year, this corresponds to an increase of 12 percent. As already known, the energy sources solar and wind play a major role in this development.
The expansion of solar capacity in 2023 almost doubled to 14.1 GW compared to the previous year. This is due to numerous private investments. There was also an increased expansion of solar systems on commercial roofs and open spaces. The most solar capacity was installed in Bavaria in 2023 with 3.5 GW. At the end of 2023, the total installed capacity in Germany was 81.7 GW. This means that 19 GW will have to be added annually in the future in order to achieve the expansion target of 215 GW for solar in 2030.
The majority of privately operated building systems include a storage facility. In 2023, this was the case with around 70 percent of solar systems.
