Global battery storage deployments reach nearly 9 GWh in April, reports Rho Motion

Market intelligence firm Rho Motion, the downstream arm of Benchmark Mineral Intelligence, says it tracked nearly 9 GWh of new global battery energy storage system (BESS) capacity entering commercial operations in April 2025. This came from a total of 3,333 MW / 8,890 MWh of grid-scale projects.

According to Rho Motion’s “Battery Energy Stationary Storage Monthly Database,” this April capacity is 13% higher than in the same period last year. However, it marks the lowest deployment month in 2025 so far, potentially due to industry seasonality.

The data also indicates that global deployments were more evenly distributed across geolocations than during the first quarter of the year.

China, the world’s largest energy storage market, commissioned 1,498 MW / 3,561 MWh in April. This was its least busy month for 2025, accounting for a much smaller proportion of global deployments than its near two-thirds share in the first three months of the year. China’s cumulative BESS installations now stand at 106.9 GW / 240.3 GWh.

The London-based analyst firm noted that the South and Central America region added 489 MW / 2,157 MWh, driven by projects in Chile.

Notable projects include the second phase of Grenergy’s Oasis de Atacama and Atlas Renewable Energy’s BESS del Desierto. Meanwhile, the Oceania region, mainly Australia, had its best month of 2025, deploying 494 MW / 1,097 MWh, including the 55 MW / 220 MWh Cunderdin solar-plus-storage project.

North America brought 609 MW / 1,613 MWh online in April, a significant drop from the previous month, while Europe added 224 MW / 421 MWh.

Overall, Rho Motion reported that 42 GWh of BESS has been deployed globally in the first four months of 2025, a 62% increase year-on-year. Earlier in the year, the firm’s outlook for the full year indicated a planned capacity of 440 GWh.

Typical of many analysts and forecasts grappling with geopolitical uncertainty at the moment, Rho Motion offered caution that project delays and cancellations, partly due to US-China tariff uncertainties, have more potential to see that figure fall short.

The latest forecast was for 297.3 GWh to be installed.

2025 thus far for grid-scale BESS per Rho Motion:

  • January: 13.6 GWh

  • February: 10.5GWh

  • March: 10.9GWh

  • April: 8.9 GWh
