Mahagi Health Zone in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has faced significant challenges due to a lack of connection to the public electricity grid and soaring fuel prices. These issues have hindered the operations of hospitals and health centers, making it difficult for them to meet World Health Organization (WHO) health standards. Without reliable electricity, these facilities struggled to perform appropriate surgical interventions or use essential equipment like oxygen concentrators.
In response to this critical situation, the Diocesan Office of Medical Works (Bdom Mahagi) sought help from its partner, Begeca. GoShop Energy was selected to supply and install eight solar energy systems with battery storage across various health centers. This project, executed between August and November 2023, included installations at D’angumu Hospital, Lybo Hospital, Sara Sara Health Center, Nyalebe Health Center, Hospital Logo Hospital, N’Djalusene Health Center, Biringi Health Center, and Radio Umuja.
Thanks to GoShop Energy’s intervention, these health centers now have a reliable and sustainable power supply. The installed solar systems power essential medical equipment, including oxygen concentrators, and enable the performance of over 40 surgical procedures per day. This initiative has significantly improved healthcare quality in the region, ensuring continuous access to electricity and reducing reliance on costly diesel generators.
“With solar energy, we can now perform surgeries at any time, which was not possible before,” says Dr. Kazi, a surgeon at D’angumu Hospital.
The project, led by GoShop Energy in collaboration with Begeca, has transformed the health landscape of the Mahagi health zone. By providing sustainable solar energy solutions, GoShop Energy has helped overcome energy challenges and contributed to saving lives and improving the well-being of local communities. This initiative demonstrates the profound impact that innovative energy solutions can have on remote and underserved areas.
