Liberty Two Degrees (L2D) has announced the completion of South Africa’s largest registered rooftop solar installation at Eastgate Shopping Centre. This milestone is a part of L2D’s commitment to renewable energy and sustainability. The solar project, expected to be fully operational by Q3 2024, signifies a significant step in L2D’s Net Zero Carbon journey.
Eastgate Shopping Centre began its transition to renewable energy in 2020 by commissioning the first phase of its solar system. This initial phase included a 1 MW [AC] or 1.219 MWp installation, which saved 1,910 MWh of energy in 2023. Building on this success, the mall added a second phase comprising a 5 MW [AC] or 5.997 MWp solar power installation. Together, these phases have equipped the mall with almost 13,675 solar panels, covering an area of approximately 28,100m² and generating 35.04% of Eastgate’s daily energy needs.
“This innovation in renewable energy generation at Eastgate is a testament to L2D’s position in environmental leadership. L2D is proud to lead many firsts in this space,” commented Brian Unsted, L2D Sustainability Lead.
The rooftop solar installation reduces Eastgate’s reliance on the national grid and provides additional shaded parking. The construction involved new structural steel subframes to support the existing rooftop parking, allowing the stormwater and drainage systems to function as usual.
Melinda Isaacs, L2D’s development executive, highlighted the collaborative effort behind this achievement. “This is a significant achievement attributable to a collective effort from our property team, professional consultants, and service providers, as well as through our tenants’ support and cooperation. L2D prides itself on collaborating with the best in the industry to achieve its Net Zero Carbon targets. Due to the reduced reliance on the grid, Eastgate will see an estimated reduction of 10.9 tons of CO² emissions per year, for both phases combined. We are very proud to have achieved this milestone towards L2D’s Net Zero Carbon journey.”
L2D’s sustainability strategy not only focuses on reducing grid dependence but also on enhancing operational efficiencies. The marketing campaign accompanying this initiative aimed to educate customers and tenants, reinforcing L2D’s dedication to creating sustainable, shared value for the future.
Through this groundbreaking project, Liberty Two Degrees reaffirms its commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable business practices, ensuring lasting benefits for future generations.
