Lightsource bp adds 1st Taiwanese fishery solar project

Lightsource bp, the UK-based solar developer half-owned by BP Plc , has moved into East Asia, securing a 150-MW fishery solar project in Taiwan.

The company has partnered with local firm Green Rock Energy to co-develop the project in line with its strategy to work with Taiwanese developers to merge its solar expertise with local knowledge.

The 150-MW Budai project, scheduled to move into construction in June 2023, is also Lightsource bp’s first fishery initiative.

The solar farm is expected to generate 210,000 MWh a year, enough to serve around 43,000 homes, while enabling fishermen to farm on around 200 ponds.

The news is the latest step in the UK developer’s global expansion as it pursues its ambition of developing 25 GW of solar by 2025.

“There are a lot of interesting opportunities for solar in Asia and our long-term ambition is to have an EMEA, Americas and an Asia Pacific region so we’re excited that through our first East Asian project in Taiwan, we are beginning to build that third leg of the stool,” said chief executive Nick Boyle.
