Manila Water to Install 2.5 MWp Solar Power in Major Facilities

In line with its dedication to reducing carbon emissions and promoting decarbonization, Manila Water is set to install solar power systems at three major facilities this month.

According to an Inquirer report, this initiative aligns with the company’s strategy to decrease its carbon footprint while ensuring sustainable water services, supporting the Department of Energy's National Energy Efficiency and Conservation Plan (NEECP) and the government's goals for energy sufficiency and sustainability.

The three locations chosen for the solar power installations are the Cardona Treatment Plant (TP), the East La Mesa Treatment Plant (TP), and the San Juan Compound.

Together, these installations will have a combined solar power capacity of 2.5 megawatts peak (MWp), generating an estimated 3.6 million kilowatt hours (MkWh) annually. This will help alleviate the demand on the national power grid and reduce the likelihood of power alerts.

The initiative is projected to cut greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 2,564 tons of CO2 equivalent (CO2e) each year and mitigate rising energy costs that could affect water rates.

Jeric Sevilla, the Corporate Communication Affairs Group Director of Manila Water, emphasized the significance of environmental sustainability within the company’s operations. He noted that this decentralized solar installation is just one of many energy-saving measures being implemented as part of the company's Energy and Sustainability strategies.

In 2023, Manila Water partnered with Ditrolic Energy to sign a notable 15-year Solar Facility Power Purchase Agreement valued at Php 217 million, highlighting their proactive approach to advancing sustainable energy solutions for the future.

The installation of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems at these three sites is scheduled for completion in the fourth quarter of 2024. Once finished, these projects will enhance operational efficiency and positively impact communities in Metro Manila, Rizal Province, San Juan City, and Quezon City.
