The Egyptian Cabinet has given the go-ahead for several major renewable energy projects proposed by Masdar, a prominent Emirati company, and Empower, a subsidiary of the Al Nowais Investment Group.
Masdar has been authorized to commence studies on a massive solar energy station capable of generating up to 4 GW. Additionally, the Cabinet has approved advancing another Masdar project aimed at harnessing 1,200 MW of solar energy, complemented by storage batteries with a total capacity of 240 MWh.
National Strategy
In parallel, the Cabinet has also endorsed the progression of multiple renewable energy initiatives by Empower. These projects will focus on integrating storage batteries, either in conjunction with solar energy systems or as standalone installations. The combined efforts of these initiatives are expected to significantly boost Egypt’s electricity supply, helping to meet growing demand and ensure the availability of additional power by the upcoming summer.
These combined efforts aim to meet the growing demand for electricity in Egypt, in particular for the coming summer, whilst also aligning with the nation’s National Strategy for Climate Change 2050, and Egypt’s Vision 2030.
Egypt relied on fossil fuels for 88% of its electricity in 2023. Its per capita emissions are lower than the global average. Egypt’s largest clean electricity source is hydro (7%). Wind and solar are starting to grow, comprising 5% of the country’s electricity in 2023, up from just 1% in 2015.
