Netherlands and Lithuania Add 265 MWh of Battery Storage Capacity

Two large-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS) have entered operation in the Netherlands and Lithuania, adding a combined 125 MW of power capacity and 265 MWh of storage capacity.
In the Netherlands, energy storage developer Return has brought its 100 MW / 200 MWh Antares standalone battery storage project in Waddinxveen into commercial operation. Connected directly to TenneT’s 150 kV high-voltage grid, the project will provide flexibility to the electricity system and support the integration of renewable energy.
In Lithuania, Danish renewable energy developer European Energy has opened a 25 MW / 65 MWh battery storage system alongside its 78.5 MW solar farm in Anykščiai. The hybrid facility combines solar generation with battery storage, helping balance fluctuations in renewable electricity generation and improve grid flexibility.
The two projects highlight the growing role of battery storage in Europe, where increasing solar and wind capacity is driving demand for flexible electricity systems and more efficient use of renewable energy.
