Philippine President Extends Collaboration Invitation To Australia On Climate Change And Renewable Energy

During the leaders’ plenary session at the ASEAN-Australia Special Summit, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. extended an invitation to Australia for a strategic partnership in climate change efforts and the renewable energy sector. Emphasizing the Philippines’ commitment to reducing emissions through investments in renewable energy, President Marcos welcomed Australia’s initiatives in clean energy trade and investment within ASEAN.

President Marcos urged Australia to collaborate on the Philippines’ clean energy industry, emphasizing the nation’s dedication to clean, green, and renewable energy. He encouraged the introduction of energy efficiency and conservation measures. Addressing the vulnerability of the Philippines to climate change, President Marcos highlighted the country’s bold actions domestically and internationally, expressing support for the outcomes of COP28.

In a significant offer, President Marcos reiterated the Philippines’ willingness to host the Board of the Loss and Damage Fund. This move aims to amplify global commitment to inclusivity in shaping urgent global climate policies, ensuring the voices of the most affected countries are considered.

Regarding ASEAN Centres of Excellence, President Marcos called upon Australia to continue supporting the ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity (ACB) beyond 2024. He stressed the need for effective implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, aligning with biodiversity conservation, climate action, ecosystem restoration, and management goals.

The ASEAN-Australia Plan of Action 2025-2029 is set to incorporate these considerations, fostering cooperation in various areas, including climate action, education, development, and people-to-people exchanges. The Joint Declaration on Strategic Partnership, signed by President Marcos and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese in September last year, solidifies the bilateral ties between the Philippines and Australia, elevating the relationship to a strategic partnership.
