PT PLN (Persero) has entered into a strategic partnership with Hong Kong-based GD Power Overseas Investment Company Limited (GD Power) to develop the Karangkates Floating Solar Power Plant (PLTS) in East Java. This plant, with a capacity of 129 Megawatt peak (MWp), marks a significant step in Indonesia’s energy transition efforts. The collaboration was formalized with the signing of a Letter of Intent (LoI) between PLN, PLN Nusantara Renewables, and GD Power in Jakarta.
PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo emphasized the importance of this partnership in advancing green energy initiatives in Indonesia. “The LoI for the 129 MWp Karangkates Floating Solar Power Plant has been signed today. This collaboration is crucial as we aim to balance economic growth with environmental sustainability,” said Darmawan.
The Karangkates Floating PLTS is expected to generate up to 219 Gigawatt hours (GWh) of clean electricity annually, catering to the energy needs of Java Island, particularly East Java. The plant will significantly contribute to Indonesia’s renewable energy capacity and is projected to reduce carbon emissions by approximately 180,000 tons of CO2 per year.
Darmawan highlighted the broader impact of the project, stating, “This initiative not only delivers affordable clean energy but also supports national economic growth, creates jobs, alleviates poverty, and improves community welfare.”
Zhao Zhigang, Authorized Representative of GD Power Hong Kong Overseas Investment Company Limited, noted the global shift towards clean energy as a response to climate change. “In the face of climate change and resource constraints, accelerating the transition to sustainable energy is imperative. Solar power plants, with their environmental benefits, abundant resources, and wide distribution, are key to the future of energy development,” said Zhao.
He reiterated GD Power’s commitment to collaborating with stakeholders to ensure the success of the Karangkates Floating Solar Power Plant project. “We are dedicated to executing this project with the highest quality standards and contributing to Indonesia’s economic development and energy transition,” Zhao concluded.
