Report reveals 120GW rooftop potential to light up Turkey

Writer: Energy BoxEnergy Box

In a groundbreaking revelation, Türkiye’s rooftops have emerged as a hidden goldmine, holding the key to a solar-powered transformation. A recent report by Ember Climate uncovers a staggering 120 gigawatts (GW) of solar potential, presenting a game-changing opportunity to meet 45% of the nation’s electricity needs. This revelation not only dwarfs Türkiye’s current solar capacity but also signals a transformative moment for clean energy expansion.

Ember’s high-resolution satellite imagery paints a promising picture, highlighting major cities like Istanbul, Ankara, and Izmir as solar leaders with over 10 GW of potential each. Industrial hubs such as Kocaeli and Manisa, with optimal flat roofs, closely follow, showcasing Türkiye’s diverse solar landscape.

Beyond electricity generation, embracing rooftop solar offers advantages such as enhanced energy independence and economic security by reducing reliance on imported fossil fuels. The decentralized distribution of rooftop power further contributes to overall grid efficiency and resilience.

To unlock this solar treasure trove, proactive measures are essential. The report proposes policy changes, including mandatory solar installations in new buildings and public spaces, financial incentives like subsidies and loans, and streamlined regulations to reduce installation costs and delays.

Projections suggest that Türkiye’s rooftop capacity, if fully utilized, could cover a substantial 45% of the country’s total electricity consumption in 2022. Istanbul, Ankara, and Izmir emerge as key players in this energy revolution, while provinces like Afyon, Çorum, and Kırşehir signal a potential reduction in residential subsidies through rooftop electricity generation.

On a global scale, Türkiye’s journey into rooftop solar aligns with a larger trend. Worldwide, 239 GW of new solar capacity was added in 2022, with almost half installed on rooftops. Türkiye’s embrace of rooftop solar could not only lead to energy self-sufficiency but also has profound economic implications by reducing the need for subsidized electricity from the grid.

As Türkiye unveils its rooftop solar potential, it charts a course toward energy self-sufficiency, redefining its energy narrative in a pivotal moment. The question now is whether Türkiye will seize this golden opportunity and illuminate a brighter, more sustainable future.
