RWE has commenced the construction of a new photovoltaic facility boasting a capacity of 20 megawatts peak (15.7 MWac) in Bedburg, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. This installation, comprising over 36,600 solar modules, will produce ample green energy to power approximately 5,400 households.
Construction of the new solar farm is underway on reclaimed land at the Garzweiler opencast mine, situated within 200 meters of the A44 motorway. Expected to commence electricity generation in late summer, the photovoltaic facility marks RWE’s latest venture in renewable energy. Adjacent to the motorway, RWE has established its inaugural agrivoltaics demonstration site. Additionally, RWE operates three sizable photovoltaic storage power plants in the Rhenish mining area and is developing two more solar projects, totaling over 51 MWp, in the Hambach opencast mine— one of which incorporates battery storage. Future photovoltaic initiatives are also on the horizon in the region.
Katja Wünschel, CEO RWE Renewables Europe & Australia, said, “The latest figures confirm the record expansion of renewables in Germany. I am delighted that we at RWE are playing our part in this. The plant in Bedburg is already the seventh solar project we have initiated in the Rhenish lignite area. Most of them are combined with storage facilities. In this way, we are driving forward the energy transition in our home market of Germany. In total, we will invest around 11 billion euros net in green generation capacity in Germany by 2030.”
