Oil giant Shell (AMS:SHELL) and Eku Energy, the UK battery platform of Macquarie’’s Green Investment Group (GIG) have energised their 200-MW/400-MWh Rangebank battery in Victoria.
Located in Cranbourne, in Melbourne’s southeast, the facility is Victoria’s second largest battery energy storage system (BESS), the partners said on Tuesday. Their partner in the scheme is the Rangebank Business Park owned by Perfection Private, which holds a minority interest.
The site's opening was marked by an official ceremony attended by company and local government officials, among whom Lily D’Ambrosio, Victoria's Minister for Energy and Resources.
Rangebank will provide storage capacity enough to supply 80,000 homes with electricity during an hour of peak demand periods. The energy storage facility will help stabilise Victoria’s electricity supply by feeding electricity into the grid when demand is high.
Fluence Energy, which equipped the BESS with its GridstackTM units, will service and maintain the system. Shell Energy will have access to 100% of the battery’s capacity under a 20-year tolling agreement.
Shell and GIG joined hands to develop the Rangebank project in 2023
