US personal care company Kimberly Clark Corp (NYSE:KMB) has tapped energy assets developer and operator Energy Partners (EP) to build a rooftop solar site for its Epping manufacturing site in South Africa.
The project will be realised under a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) between the two parties, according to a statement released today.
Touted as one of the largest rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) systems in the City of Cape Town, the installation will have a capacity of 2.2 MW to power the local manufacturing of products under the brands Huggies and Kotex.
The site will produce 3,478 MWh of clean electricity annually, eliminating more than 3,130 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per year.
“We are committed to reducing our environmental footprint and this project will contribute towards helping us meet our 2030 goal to reduce total emissions by 50% compared to 2015 globally,” said Steven Hayes, general manager of Kimberly Clark Sub-Saharan Africa.
Cape Town-based EP develops, invests and operates utility assets through its divisions dedicated to power, refrigeration, steam, intelligence and engineering. Founded in 2009, it is part of the PSG group of companies.
