Southeast Asia’s Data Center Boom Strengthens the Case for Solar-Plus-Storage

Southeast Asia’s rapidly expanding data center sector is facing growing power supply constraints, strengthening the case for renewable energy and battery energy storage as governments and investors reassess the pace of infrastructure development.

At Singapore International Energy Week, held from October 26 to 30, energy industry representatives highlighted the widening gap between data center development and the power infrastructure needed to support it. While data centers can be built in around two years, new generation and grid infrastructure may take four to ten years to develop.

According to analysis cited by S&P Global Energy, solar-plus-storage solutions are becoming increasingly attractive as developers seek faster alternatives to conventional power generation. Battery storage deployment across the region is expected to grow significantly by 2030, supported by rising electricity demand and government policies encouraging renewable energy integration.

Malaysia is emerging as an important market in this trend. The country's growing data center pipeline is increasing pressure on electricity supply, while clean energy requirements and dedicated electricity tariffs are shaping procurement decisions. Singapore is also strengthening its regulatory framework for data centers, including requirements related to energy efficiency and clean energy commitments.

These developments could create opportunities for utility-scale solar, commercial and industrial energy storage, and integrated energy solutions. For data center operators, combining solar generation with battery storage can help improve energy management and support more reliable access to electricity, depending on project design, grid conditions, and the availability of suitable power contracts.

However, project economics will remain closely tied to electricity tariffs, grid access, regulatory frameworks, and financing conditions. Clearer procurement mechanisms and more predictable market rules will be important to converting rising demand into bankable renewable energy and storage projects.

As Southeast Asia continues to attract digital infrastructure investment, the ability to deliver reliable, competitively priced, and lower-carbon electricity is likely to become an increasingly important factor in the region's energy transition.
