SSE Energy Markets has signed two 15-year power purchase agreements (PPAs) with renewable energy producer Low Carbon, securing 52 MW of contracted solar capacity across two landmark solar farms, marking a significant milestone for the UK's clean energy transition.
The agreements apply to the solar PV power facilities at Feldon Vale and Long Meadow, which are located in North West Wales and South East England, respectively, and are scheduled to start commercial operations in 2026.
SSE Energy Markets will offer route-to-market and optimization services, including as energy trading, balancing risk management, and selling of Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin (REGO) certificates, at a set price for 15 years under the long-term PPAs. This arrangement shifts market volatility risk to SSE's skilled trading staff while providing Low Carbon with steady earnings.
Gordon Bell, Managing Director of SSE Energy Markets, stated, "These agreements demonstrate
our commitment to supporting the growth of renewable energy in the UK and our ability to provide comprehensive route-to-market solutions for solar developers." His guidance was crucial in setting up the agreements and coordinating SSE's business plan with Low Carbon's development goals.
Together, the 52 MW of solar power should provide about 76 GWh of clean electricity a year, which would be sufficient to power tens of thousands of households in the UK while lowering carbon emissions.
This collaboration is a sign of success for Low Carbon in the cutthroat world of renewable
energy. Securing long-term offtake agreements is crucial to ensure these facilities "deliver reliable, optimised clean energy at scale" as part of the company's larger UK solar portfolio, according to Marco Verspuij, Head of Power Management at Low Carbon.
The partnership has successfully locked in predictable revenue streams for the next 15 years by combining Low Carbon's pipeline of high-quality solar assets with SSE's commercial and trading capabilities. This has allowed the solar farms to secure financing and confidently move forward with construction and
