The Hydrogen Stream: Repsol, Sunfire advance 200 MW of green H2 in Spain

Spanish energy giant Repsol and German electrolyzer specialist Sunfire have reported work on joint green hydrogen projects totaling 200 MW of electrolysis capacity throughout Spain, marking a significant step toward decarbonizing industrial energy systems. The project serves Europe's larger energy transition objectives while strengthening the nation's position as a leader in the generation of renewable hydrogen.

According to the agreement, Sunfire will provide

200 MW of pressurized alkaline electrolyzers for use in two Repsol-led renewable hydrogen facilities. These electrolyzers, which are part of Repsol's plan to integrate green hydrogen into its industrial activities and lower carbon intensity, are slated for commissioning in 2029.

A 100 MW electrolyzer next to Repsol's industrial complex in Cartagena and another 100 MW plant at the Petronor site in Muskiz (Bilbao) are the two main places where the 200 MW capacity will be placed. Each plant is anticipated to use power from renewable production to produce up to 15,000 tons of renewable hydrogen per year once it is operational. Repsol's refining and chemical production processes will consume the hydrogen, which will help replace hydrogen derived from fossil fuels and significantly reduce carbon emissions.

Carlos López-Aranguren, Director of Renewable Hydrogen Projects at Repsol, stated, "Working with a partner like Sunfire enables us to scale our renewable hydrogen production with world-class technology." "This 200 MW investment is a critical step in our journey to decarbonize heavy industry and support Spain's growing hydrogen economy," stated López-Aranguren. The projects also benefit from a supportive regulatory environment and strong local partnerships, both of which are necessary to meet ambitious climate targets.

Repsol's green hydrogen strategy is a component of a larger national initiative: Spain has set aside substantial public funds and regulatory assistance to establish hydrogen "valleys" and renewable clusters that combine industrial use, production, and storage. With these measures, Spain hopes to become a leader in the hydrogen ecosystem of Europe.

In addition to its size, the Repsol-Sunfire relationship is noteworthy for demonstrating co-investment and technological cooperation between energy producers and electrolyzer manufacturers. Such partnerships will be essential to achieving climate goals and facilitating the thorough decarbonization of industries like heavy industry, chemicals, and refining as Europe develops its infrastructure for renewable hydrogen.
