TotalEnergies’ Saft to Deliver Over 1GWh Battery Storage System for Major Energy Project in Japan

Saft, the energy storage arm of TotalEnergies SE, has signed an agreement to supply a lithium-ion battery energy storage system (BESS) for Gurin Energy Pte. Ltd.’s upcoming standalone project in Soma City, Fukushima Prefecture, Japan.

In an official announcement, TotalEnergies stated that Saft will deliver a fully integrated BESS solution with more than 1 GWh of energy storage capacity. The system includes power conversion equipment and power management tools from industry partners, alongside Saft’s AI-enabled I-Sight cloud-based monitoring and data management platform.

The storage system is designed to provide over 240MW of electricity for four hours, enhancing grid stability and renewable integration. Saft will also be responsible for the installation, commissioning, and ongoing service of the system. Construction is expected to begin in 2026.

The BESS will support Japan’s decarbonization goals, helping the country move from its current 27% renewable energy mix to 40–50% by 2040, and reach net-zero emissions by 2050.
