TotalEnergies to begin work on 1-GW solar project in Iraq

French energy major TotalEnergies SE (EPA:TTE) is set to start work on a project for the construction of a 1-GW solar park in southern Iraq after getting the green light from the local government last week.

The next steps in the development of the project were discussed by Iraq's electricity minister Ziad Ali Fadhil and TotalEnergies' head of renewable energy in the country Khaled Al-Abdali at a meeting on Monday, according to a statement by the ministry.

During the meeting, Khaled Al-Abdali expressed the company's readiness to start the project and engage in such initiatives in partnership with the Ministry of Electricity.

The gigawatt-scale solar plant will be built in the Artawi oil field in Basra Governorate.

In April, the French power major said it intends to invite Saudi company ACWA Power Co (TADAWUL:2082) to join the development of a 1-GW solar project in Iraq without disclosing more details.

Apart from TotalEnergies, Chinese state-owned conglomerate Power Construction Corp of China (Power China) also got the green light from the Iraqi cabinet last week for its 750-MW solar project in the south of the Arab country.
