Trina Solar has submitted a planning application for a major battery energy storage system (BESS) in Victoria, Australia. The proposed Kiewa Valley BESS will have a capacity of 500 MW and 1 GWh, capable of dispatching power for up to two hours.
Located near Dederang, around 1.7 km from the local terminal station, the 10-hectare site will be integrated with the grid via existing transmission lines. This project aims to enhance grid stability and support Australia's transition to a cleaner, more efficient energy ecosystem.
Jose Flores, Head of Trina ISBU in Australia, expressed excitement about the project’s progress. A decision on the planning application is expected by early 2025, with further discussions underway with AEMO and AusNet regarding grid connection.
This is one of three energy storage projects Trina is developing in Australia, including the 660 MW Kemerton project in Western Australia and the 270 MW Augusta project in South Australia. Together, these projects are part of Trina's goal to deliver over 6.5 GW of clean energy generation and storage by 2027.
Victoria aims to achieve 2.6 GW of large-scale energy storage by 2030 and 6.3 GW by 2035 as part of its clean energy transition.
