UK | Econergy Acquires Four Battery Storage Projects with a Combined Capacity of 106 MW

United Kingdom — Econergy Ltd, a European renewable energy independent power producer (IPP), has acquired a portfolio of four operational battery energy storage system (BESS) projects in the UK, adding 106 MW of storage capacity to its existing portfolio and strengthening its position in the country's energy storage market.
Under the transaction, Econergy acquired 100% of the shares in the holding company of the four assets, securing full ownership and control. The acquired portfolio is expected to generate approximately £4.7 million in earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) in 2027, before any proposed upgrades to the facilities.
Expanding Operational Battery Storage Capacity
All four acquired projects are standalone battery energy storage facilities already in commercial operation. Each currently operates as a one-hour battery system, with the potential to extend its storage duration to three hours.
Increasing storage duration would enable the facilities to store more electricity and deliver power over longer periods, improving their ability to respond to changes in electricity prices and market demand. The upgrades could also create additional opportunities to store electricity during periods of high renewable generation and discharge it when demand or market prices rise.
The acquisition increases Econergy's operational BESS capacity in the UK from 90 MW to 196 MW, expanding its portfolio of grid-connected operating assets from two projects to six.
Before the transaction, the company's operational UK storage portfolio included the 50 MW / 100 MWh West Melton project, which has been operating since 2024, and the 40 MW / 120 MWh Dalmarnock project, which connected to the grid on 1 October 2026.
Strengthening Econergy's UK Storage Pipeline
Beyond its operational assets, Econergy has a 1.6 GW battery storage development pipeline in the UK. The company is expanding its storage portfolio as part of a broader strategy to diversify its European business across technologies and markets.
Across Europe, Econergy's BESS portfolio totals approximately 5.9 GW, with 3.3 GW expected to be connected to the grid, under construction or in pre-construction by 2028. Battery storage accounts for approximately 45% of the company's total portfolio and 40% of its advanced portfolio.
The acquisition adds operating assets that can generate revenue while offering opportunities to increase their value through potential storage-duration upgrades. It also supports Econergy's efforts to expand its presence in the UK, where battery storage plays an increasingly important role in balancing electricity supply and demand.
Supporting a More Flexible Electricity System
The transaction reflects the growing importance of operational battery storage assets in European power markets. As renewable generation expands, battery systems can help manage fluctuations in electricity supply, respond to market price signals and shift electricity availability across different periods.
For developers and investors, acquiring operational BESS projects offers an opportunity to expand storage capacity without relying exclusively on greenfield development. Potential upgrades to longer-duration systems may further enhance asset flexibility and create additional value as market conditions evolve.
Econergy's acquisition therefore combines immediate operational capacity with the potential for future asset optimisation, reinforcing the company's strategy to expand its battery storage business in the UK and across Europe.
