Vietnam to join hands with Singapore for green economic partnership

Vietnam is all set to join hands with Singapore for digital and green economic partnership.

The latest development came following the state visit of Singapore’s President Halimah Yacob to Vietnam last week. The President held a meeting with Vietnam’s Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and discussed on renewable energy partnerships.

It has been reported that Halimah expressed hope that the “two countries would be able to develop an Asean power grid, citing Vietnam’s 3,260km-long coastline as having strong potential to produce solar and wind energy.”

During the trip, she said, “It will certainly contribute towards our zero-emissions target because we will have more renewable energy for our use. Not just for our use, if there’s excess, then it goes through the Asean region and helps to strengthen Asean solidarity.”

To be noted, both the countries Singapore and Vietnam have goals to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. The duo have inked at least four agreements, out of which two are related to renewable energy and carbon credits.

The duo will collaborate on energy, including developing low-carbon energy technologies such as hydrogen, ammonia, and its related infrastructures.

For the Asean power grid, the duo shared that there will be more discussions on various components including the strong policymaking and mechanisms.

As per the local reports, Singapore has been importing renewable energy from Laos. It passes through Thailand and Malaysia. It is the first renewable energy import into Singapore, and also the first multilateral cross-border electricity trade that includes four Asean countries.
